Local input on design of new youth facility

Latest News Detention Centre

Local residents and businesses will be asked for input into the master planning and design of  Tasmania’s new youth justice detention facility.

Following the Tasmanian Government’s announcement that 466 Brighton Road, Pontville is the preferred site for the new facility, the Department for Education, Children and Young People has commenced further site assessments, including natural values and Aboriginal heritage.

Minister for Education, Children and Youth, Roger Jaensch said it was important the local community is kept informed about the project.

“It’s understandable there may be uncertainty, and people want to know what the next steps are,” Minister Jaensch said.

“One of the key steps will be seeking input from surrounding property owners, community groups and businesses into the site master planning process, including site layout, buffering, and landscaping.

“By providing this input, a lot can be achieved to the ensure the new facility will be as discrete and unobtrusive as possible.

“The new facility will be smaller than the existing Ashley Youth Detention Centre at Deloraine, catering for a smaller number of detainees. It will be designed to provide a more therapeutic, less institutional setting, and landscaped to screen it from view”

“We will continue to provide the local community with regular updates and information about the process as it progresses.”

Subject to the further site assessments, early works are expected to commence in 2024. These works will include power, sewer/water and NBN infrastructure as well as extensive landscaping to establish screening vegetation.

A regular newsletter will be produced from early 2024, which will be distributed to stakeholders and made available on the Department’s website at https://www.decyp.tas.gov.au/safe-children/youth-justice-services/youth-justice-reform-in-tasmania/proposed-youth-justice-facilities/
