Local residents and businesses will be asked for input into the master planning and design of Tasmania’s new youth justice detention facility.
Following the Tasmanian Government’s announcement that 466 Brighton Road, Pontville is the preferred site for the new facility, the Department for Education, Children and Young People has commenced further site assessments, including natural values and Aboriginal heritage.
Minister for Education, Children and Youth, Roger Jaensch said it was important the local community is kept informed about the project.

From 2am tomorrow (Tuesday 3 October 2023) Fire Permits are required in Southern Municipalities until the end of the 2023-24 bushfire season.
If you have a property in a Southern municipality and you wish to conduct a burn (larger than 1 cubic meter in size) on your property, you will need to apply for a free Fire Permit, by contacting your local fire brigade or calling Tasmania Fire Service on 1800 000 699.

Further to the information included in the August 2022 edition of the Council Newsletter, the Local Government Board has now issued its Stage 2 Report entitled ‘The future of local government review – Options Paper’. For those that may have not read the previous Council report, the Tasmanian Government has commissioned a Local Government Board Review into the Future of Local Government in Tasmania.

As part of the implementation of the Biosecurity Act 2019 (the Act), beekeeping is now considered a 'regulated dealing’ and under the Act, a person must not engage in a regulated dealing unless they are registered. Therefore, registration is now compulsory for all Tasmanian commercial and recreational beekeepers. This requirement was formalised in new Biosecurity Regulations 2022 which came into effect on 2 November 2022.

Tasmanian-based THN Hospitality Pty Ltd (THN) is pleased to have been named the preferred proponent to develop a boutique hotel at Oatlands. Following a rigorous selection process and detailed collaboration, the Southern Midlands Council and THN Hospitality have signed a Development & Sale Agreement which addresses the conditions under which the project can progress.
