Bird owners encouraged to provide their details to support H5 bird flu response

Tasmanian owners of pet and domestic birds are being encouraged to provide details of where their birds are kept to help strengthen the state's preparedness for H5 bird flu.

The voluntary registration will help Biosecurity Tasmania communicate directly with bird owners and support disease tracing efforts if further H5 bird flu detections occur.

State Controller Justin Helmich said the information would help Biosecurity Tasmania provide timely advice to owners.

"H5 bird flu is present in Tasmania, and we expect to see more detections in new areas of the state," Mr Helmich said.

"Providing your details now will help us contact bird owners to provide important updates and practical advice about H5 bird flu and any measures that may affect bird owners in Tasmania.

“This is an opportunity for bird owners to help take action and strengthen Tasmania’s biosecurity.”

"The information provided through this voluntary registration will help us communicate quickly with owners in areas where there are further detections and support disease tracing if an outbreak occurs."

Anyone who owns pet or domestic birds, including backyard and hobby poultry keepers, can complete the form. Commercial poultry producers do not need to participate.

"This is a voluntary measure, but it's one practical way bird owners can help us strengthen Tasmania's preparedness and response capability."
