Heritage Conservation Management
Southern Midlands Council recognises that the region’s heritage is a fundamental component of its identity, character and sense of place. In addition to its statutory responsibilities as a planning authority for the protection and management of heritage values, Council supports a range of non-statutory heritage projects under the direction of the Manager Heritage Projects.
While these initiatives extend beyond Council’s core statutory planning responsibilities, Council recognises the significant broader benefits that heritage conservation and interpretation can provide to the community. Heritage projects contribute to strengthening community identity and connection to place, supporting education and learning opportunities, and enhancing the region’s appeal as a destination for visitors and tourists.
Council is committed to demonstrating best-practice heritage management and to protecting, interpreting and promoting the Southern Midlands’ rich cultural heritage for current and future generations. The value of these projects extends beyond the preservation of individual heritage places, with their broader social, cultural, educational and economic benefits contributing to the long-term vitality of the region.
Successful heritage outcomes rely on collaboration across Council, the community, heritage organisations, tourism stakeholders and other partners. By connecting heritage initiatives with broader community, educational and tourism objectives, Council seeks to maximise the opportunities arising from the municipality’s distinctive heritage assets and ensure they continue to contribute to a strong and sustainable sense of place.
Brad Williams is Council’s Manager Heritage Projects and is responsible for the planning, development, promotion and implementation of heritage initiatives across the Southern Midlands.
The Heritage Projects program focuses on the conservation, interpretation and promotion of Council-owned heritage assets, as well as the broader historic and cultural heritage of the Southern Midlands municipal area. Through this work, Council seeks to protect and celebrate the region’s significant heritage places, stories and traditions for the benefit of current and future generations.
